Nowadays, the relationship between health status and productivity loss among employed participants have become a concerned issue. The consistent research on this issue has found that health risks and health conditions are related to massive productivity losses. It is evident that health and wellbeing at work can have profound impacts on individuals, organizations and societies (European Commission, 2008).

It is said that, a happy employee is a productive employee. So, by ensuring employees workplace wellness programs that support their health and connection in the workplace, the job satisfaction improves, the engagement increases, the attrition declines, and the performance climbs. So, the fact is the healthier and happier employees are more productive.

Risk of Unhealthy Lifestyle

The health risks usually found these days are overweight/obesity, cigarette use, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. The report says that, A Canadian Mental Health Association estimates mental health cost approximately 50 billion issues every year. Also 500,000 Canadians off work every week due to mental stress or illness.

Moreover, many new health hazards like depression, anxiety and other mental health issues, financial stress, sleep deprivation, and the strain of caring for ailing parents, further contribute to lost productivity have been found.

Unhealthy Employees Are Less Productive

In addition, when employees suffer from chronic disease, then the cost to employers is represented as lost productivity because of:

  1. employee absenteeism;
  2. disability;
  3. accidents;
  4. reduced workplace effectiveness; and
  5. negative impacts on work quality or customer service

 Therefore, An employee who reports being content with his/her current job has on average 6.92 percentage points less work impairment due to absenteeism and/or presenteeism than an employee who is unhappy with his/her job.
